Screw Piles
Screw piles, also known as helical piles or helical piers, are a type of deep foundation system used to support various types of structures. They consist of helical-shaped steel plates (also called helices) that are welded to a central steel shaft. The helical plates are similar to the threads on a screw, which is why the term "screw piles" is used to describe this foundation system.
Here's how screw piles work
Installation
Screw piles are mechanically "screwed" into the ground using hydraulic machinery. The helical plates on the shaft create a corkscrew-like motion, allowing the pile to be rotated into the soil.
Penetration
As the screw pile is turned, the helical plates cut into the soil and create a stable foundation by using the soil's bearing capacity to resist the loads placed on the structure.
Load-Bearing Capacity
The load-bearing capacity of a screw pile comes from both the end-bearing resistance of the helical plates on the tip and the frictional resistance along the length of the shaft against the surrounding soil.
Versatility
Screw piles are suitable for a wide range of soil types, including clay, sand, gravel, and even areas with water tables. They are used in situations where traditional foundation methods might be impractical due to challenging soil conditions.
WHERE ARE THESE USED?
Screw piles are commonly used in residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects where stable foundations are required.
Benefits
Engineering services are available, if required.
Key advantages of screw piles include:
Rapid Installation
Screw piles can be installed quickly, leading to reduced project timelines.
Minimal Site Disturbance
They create minimal disruption to the site as there's no need for extensive excavation.
Load Testing
Screw piles can be load-tested immediately after installation, ensuring their performance.
Versatility
They can be used in various applications and are suitable for both permanent and temporary structures.
Environmentally Friendly
Screw piles have a low environmental impact compared to traditional concrete foundations.
Ease of Removal
Screw piles can also be easily removed and reused if necessary.
